The study aimed to discover relationship between development of local wheat production and its consumption in Yemen and between some geographical factors which obstruct expansion of its farming area. The study has brought out the high population growth challenges and the change in food consumption behavior. It also brought out the issue of water sources scarcity and the competition between agricultural cash crops, which are of high economic returns, to occupy permanent irrigated areas. This has reduced growth rates of wheat production and farming area to 4% and 6% respectively. Growth rates of wheat imports and prices have increased in world market at rate of 25,3% and 63,6%. Wheat self-sufficiency rates in Yemen has dropped from 30% to 6% during the study period (1970 – 2010). Statistical analyses of time range data have shown relationship between the increasing demand for imported wheat and its consumption growth rates. This needs a new agricultural policy aiming at wheat improvement in terms of production and productivity through wider use of suitable modern farm practices and agricultural technologies towards realizing self-sufficiency and food security.
