YIELD EVALUATION OF BARLEY VARIETIES WITH FARMER’S PARTICIPATION IN THE NORTHERN HIGHLANDS

Abdul Wahed A. Saif
Summary

This research was conducted for comparison of eight varieties of barley in three locations (Kuhlan Affar, Shibam and Al-Tawilla which belong to Hajja and Al-Mahwit governorates) during summer season 1998. The output of this research was the selection of four varieties from among eight. The chosen varieties were again tested for yield potential and its components in the Shibam and Al-Tawilla regions under rainfed conditions for the two consecutive summer seasons 1999 and 2000. The varieties were assigned randomly in RCBD design with four replications. The results indicated that the local variety was the earliest and showed significant differences as compared to the others. A significant difference was noticed among the tested varieties and local one in plant height and number of seeds per spike, where the local variety gave lowest value. There was no significant difference in 1000 kernel weight among tested and local varieties. With respect to bio-yield, the varieties Acsad-176 and the “Al-Erra (1997) F2-6-12-1” were the best and have had a good bio-yield as compared to others including the local variety. The average grain yields of the “Al-Erra(1997)F2-6-12-1”, Acsad-176, Acsad-1482 and the local variety were 2335, 2300, 1817 and 1134; and 2100, 2050, 1817 and 1100 kg/ha over the tow years in Al-Tawila and Shibam locations.
