The study highlights the experience of implementing specialised extension approach by the Seed Potato Production Centre (SPPC) in Dhamar during the period (1984 – 1997). It uses the case study method drawing upon researcher’s own participation in this experience as an extension officer with SPPC. Secondary data; direct observation, history records and marketing surveys reports were used as sources of information for the study. Among the criteria used to study the impact of SPPC extension strategies on potato growers are: level of adoption of introduced technologies; development of seed quality, development of potato seed import and marketing channels, introduced credit facilities, and level of institutional support for farmers’ organisations. Impact measures distinguished include: spread of improved seed, improved cultural practices and seed production technologies among potato farmers, decreasing level of seed imports, organised potato seed marketing channels, introduced flexible credit system, the institutionally empowered farmers’ organisations in the targeted areas. Flexibility, clear objectives, accountability, self-initiative, sound coordination and integration of extension information, and team spirit were all lessons drawn from the experience of the specialised extension approach of SPPC.
