Summary

The experiment was conducted in the Northern Highlands areas to evaluate twenty varieties of wheat under rainfed conditions. Varieties were planted during summer season 1998 in Kuhlan Affar (Hajjah), Shibam and Al-tawilla (Al-Mahweet) areas. Five out of twenty varieties were selected including the check one and tested again for evaluation of yield potential and other components with farmers participation during two consecutive summer seasons (1999 and 2000) to breed a variety that is well adapted to rainfed conditions. Completely randomized block Design (RCBD) was used with four replications. Results indicated that local variety was the latest in flowering and differed significantly to others. No significant differences found among varieties with regard to 1000 kernel weight and number of seeds. Higher number of seeds per spike and 1000 kernel weight were obtained from Awyt-Al-erra 2-9, Awyt-Al-erra 2-1 varieties. The variety of Awyt-Al-erra 2-9 gave higher yield for the two years in Shibam region. While yield of Awyt-Al-erra 2-1 variety was the highest in Al-tawilla region.
