Summary

Study was carried out at the farmer’s fields in the study area (Tuban Delta) during the seasons of summer and winter 2000/200. The study area was divided into three sectors: upper, middle and lower Delta to evaluate some agricultural practices followed by farmers in Tuban Delta during planting and harvesting of sorghum forage crop such as plant density, data clipping, height of clipping and dehydration of the forage. Results of study showed that the average plants’ density per square meter were 79.4- 91.6 plants in summer and 65.8- 74.7 plants in winter. The average data of clipping was 52.5-53.0 days after planting in summer and 58.0- 61.5 days in winter; height of clipping was 2.01,2.20 and 2.04 cm in the upper, middle and lower Delta respectively. The green fodder reached 9.38-10.30 ton/ha in summer and 8.62- 9.17 ton./ha in winter, but the dry fodder was 3.74 - 4.10 and 3.44 –3.66 ton/ ha in summer and winter respectively. The results also showed decreasing productivity of sorghum crop forage in farmers’ fields as compared to productivity (12.2- 16.1ton/ha in the first clipping and 17.7- 20.9 ton/hectare in the second clipping). The reason behind the decline in productivity and quality of sorghum and its utility as fodder was possibly due to failure to abide with ideal recommended practices.
