Summary

A Field experiment was carried out at the research farm of Nasser's faculty of agricultural sciences, Lahej Governorate, Yemen, during two consecutive cropping seasons (96/ 97 and 97/ 98). The experiment aimed to study the leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf area index, the accumulation of dry matter, the yield and its components of three cowpea varieties Laheji, Bydhani and Omani (imported from Oman). A randomized design with 4 replications was followed. The results indicated that the leaf area on 5th nodes, and the stem of 3 cow pea varieties highest values were (229.5, 215.6 cm2 ) for Lahegi (216.2, 217.3 cm2) for Bydhani and (212.2, 214.2 cm2 ) for Omani in the 7th week after the planting in both seasons. The specific leaf area of varieties in the same period reached highest values (71.5, 75.5 cm2/g) for Laheji variety, (53.22, 52.70 cm2/g) for Bydhani variety and (52.38, 53.32 cm2/g) for Omani. The leaf area index ratio was 6.8, 6.11 in the 13th week after planting, while the two varieties gave the leaf area index (2.21, 204 for variety Bydhani, and 1.98, 1.88 for Omani variety) in the 7th week after planting in both seasons.........
