The study was carried out at Sowairy Experimental Farm of Seiyun Agricultural Research Station to evaluate 15-land races of carrot crop , which were collected from different locations of Wadi Hadramout during January-April 2003. Seed of different lines and genotypes were planted in rows in September 2003. Data on morphological, phenological and root juice characters were recorded. Results indicated that carrot germplasm in Hadramout could be classified in four distinct groups in relation to root color. These were: light-red (represented by 2 lines growing at al-Qatten and Shibam Districts); dark-red (11 lines in Shibam, Tarim and Seiyun Distrits); pink color (one line in Tarim) and a mixture of all colors (1 line in Tarim). Results of this study also showed variation between land races in some other characters and suggested the need to preserve their seed at a Gene Bank for further studies and utilization.
