Information Sources of Tihama Farmers on Modern Farm Techniques and Extension Communication Methods Used1

Summary

The study was conducted in Tihama Region using a survey descriptive method. The farmer-sample of the study was selected using the systematic random sampling method (100 respondents). The data was collected from respondents using a questionnaire through interviews after pretesting with simialr sample and some improvemnts. Results showed that 94% of respondents obtained information about farm technologies from different sources such as extensionists (54%), otherr farmers (30%), and other sources such as Seeds multiplication campany, farm research agency, supply dealers and radio. It was found that extension services had used multiple communication methods including group communication methods (54%), followed by individual contact methods (42%) and lastly the mass communication methods (4%). Training was found to serve as a source of information for about half of the respondents (46%) about the farm technologies known to them. The study concluded with a package of recommendations that aim to foster extension work and activate its role in servicing farmers of the region and in agricultural and rural development in the country.
