The Effect of Genetic Improvement of Barri Sheep Via Some Productivity Parameters

Abed Mohammed Albial
Summary

In this study, 128 records were used for Barri sheep which include herds of genetically improved in the central highland research station, and three farmer’s flocks in different locations in the same regions 2015. The study aims to investigate genetic improvement achieved in the herd of genetically improved compared to the herds of farmers in the same areas where Barri sheep are raised. Results showed that improved herd had significantly (P<0.05) surpassed herds farmers by 21 to 30% in all productive traits. Ewes Fertility in the improved herd was significantly higher (90%) than in the third herd farmer which was lower at 68.9% whereas there was no significant (P ≤ 0.05) between all herds on twin rate and prolificacy. The fixed effect as dam weight, sex lamb, and birth type was significant on birth weight, weaning weight, and average daily gain, whereas the age of the ewe had no significant effect on all traits in all herds. It was concluded that the Barri sheep have a stockpile of genetic potential. It must be exploited in the follow-up to the election of different productivity traits than dissemination of ram improved to improve the productivity of sheep farmers.
