The Influence of Climate on the Spread of Apple Diseases Spread in Latakia

Hotaf Kiwan Fawaz Ahmed El-Mosa
Summary

Apples are a fundamental element in the agricultural economy and food supply in Latakia. However, apple cultivation faces significant challenges due to the spread of diseases that can lead to substantial economic losses for farmers. Among these challenges, the impact of climatic factors on disease spread is particularly prominent. Therefore, the study conducted an in-depth investigation to understand the relationship between climate and apple diseases in Latakia. To determine the relationship between disease incidence and climatic changes, statistical methods were applied to the analysis of agricultural and climatic data. Calculations of correlation coefficients between environmental factors (such temperature and humidity) and the rates of fungal disease spread revealed a significant association between rising temperatures and the appearance of diseases like scab and powdery mildew. The findings showed that fungi that cause disease to spread in apple orchards are encouraged to proliferate by high humidity. Controlling the spread of disease is further complicated by climatic changes that occur during unstable transitional seasons. According to statistical assessments, there was an important influence of climatic elements across a number of years, as evidenced by the positive and statistically significant correlation coefficient between temperature and disease spread. On the basis of these findings, suggestions were made to strengthen the region's climate monitoring systems and increase the use of contemporary agricultural methods.
