Summary

This study was conducted in the year (2019 - 2020) with the aim of proposing a complementary approach to reducing water pollutants by using natural local resources as adsorbent materials such as Yemeni zeolite. The study focused on removing the high concentration of Fe2+ iron ion in the water. In this study, zeolite was characterized using XRD a technique that showed that the zeolite used is crystalline phases of the zeolite structures of the mineral clinoptilolite, which is dominated by potassium composition. As for the XRF technique, it showed that the ratio of silicon to aluminum in the zeolite used reaches (5.4)~Si/Al. Experiments were also conducted to remove the iron ion from water with zeolite (adsorption experiments) under static conditions using standard (single-ion) solutions of the iron ion Fe+2, at a pH (pH=3), and the weight of the zeolite (1g/100mL.) for all. The results showed that the removal rate of the Fe+2 iron ion increased with an increase in pH from 3 to 5. The equilibrium time was after (120 minutes). The removal rate increased with an increase in the amount of zeolite, and decreased with an increase in the concentration of iron ions in the water from (98%-19%). To study Effect of competing ions in water, experiments were conducted on a real groundwater sample. It was found that competing ions affect the removal efficiency slightly due to competition for adsorption and exchange sites in zeolite. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacity of iron ions on the zeolite used at a concentration of (10 ppm) is equal to (1.83 mg/g), and the value of the Langmuir correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.99) and Freundlich (R2 = 0.86), which means that the adsorption is more Comforming to the Langmuir model but discomforming with the Freundlich model and indicates that monolayer adsorption occurs. Based on the results, Yemeni zeolite is one of the effective local natural resources in improving water quality and removing iron ions by 98%.
