Summary

This evaluation experiment was done for different varieties of barley during the summer season of 2003 and 2004 ( June-July) at Al-erra research farm. Forty five varieties were planted in 2003 season. Out of these, twenty four were selected and planted at Al-erra research farm in 2004 season out of which seven varieties were finally chosen. These varieties, in addition to the local barley Bakur which was used as a check, were planted at the Kuhlan, Shibam and Bani- matar locations in 15-22 /6/ 2005 under rainfed conditions. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used with four replications Yield and its components in addition to maturity and plant height parameters were measured. Results showed that the two varieties Al-erra 2003-5a-11 and Al- erra2003-8a-21 gave higher yield than the others including the local check. Their yield averages were 2158 and 2017 kg/ha as compared with 1540 kg/ha for the local check over the three locations. No significant differences were observed between these two varieties and the local check in terms of maturing time. Additionally, the two varieties were preferable to the farmers for the increases in yield and maturity.
