Summary

This experiment was conducted in a farmer's farm, Khanfar, Abyan Governorate (2011/2012 & 2012/2013 seasons) to study the effect of different planting dates on growth, yield and components of some Maize varieties. It included nine treatments {sowing dates (25 October, 25 November & 25 December) and Maize varieties (Taiz 2, City Lagos 7931 & Kneja 36)}with four replications. The split-plot design was used with sowing dates in main plots and cultivars in subplots (3×4=12m2). A significant effect of planting dates was observed on plant height, leaf area, ear length and biological yield with highest values realized by 25-October date in number of days from planting until 50% of flowering, grain maturation period amounted, and 100-grain weight. Taiz 2 and Kenja 36 cultivars significantly surpassed City Lagos 7931 in plant height, leaf area, number of days from planting until 50% of flowering, grain maturation period amounted. Taiz 2 cultivar significantly surpassed Kenja 36 and CityLagos 7931 in 100-grain weight. Interaction between sowing dates and cultivars showed significant effect on plant height, number of days from planting until 50% of flowering, and grain maturation period (Taiz 2 cultivar with 25 October gave highest values) and (City Lagos with 25 November scored least values).
