Summary

The experiment was cond ucted in Souwairi Research Fa rm in Wadi Had ra mout during the seasons 92/1993 - 93/1994 to study the effect of different planting densities on yield and quality of potato crop. Six densities in the first season (35714, 40816, 47619, control, 57143, 71429, 95238 plant/ha) and eight densities in the second season (two more densities were added: 28571 and 31746 plants/ha) of the variety daiamont were compa red using the completely randomized block design. Results of the two seasons revealed that yield increase occu rred when density increased up to 95238 plant/ha which gave the highest yield (25% and 12% in the two seasons respectively). With rega rd to density reduction, results revea led that density of 35714 plant/ha (25% less tha n recommended density) gave no effect on yield. However, the effect on such density reduction was obderved on the quality interms of "tubers size". Findings showed that as the density increase, the number of big tubers decrease; and as the small ones increase. In general, the density of 35714 plants/ ha and spacing of 70 X 40 cm, with 25% less than recommended density, is most suitable density for good yield when prices of the potatoes seeds goes up .
