Summary

This study aimed at estimating and analyzing the marketing margins for Tomatoes and Onions (produced in Abyan and Lehj during the period 98/1999 and 99/2000), and for bananas and babaya (produced in Abyan during the year 2001), marketed in Aden city. The data was collected with the help of the Agricultural Extension Workers at the farm gate in Abyan and Lehj, and by the researchers at the wholesale and retail markets. The results showed that marketing margins were: 39% for tomatoes, 44% and 57% for onions during the study period, and 55% and 69% for bananas and papaya respectively. The marketing margins were calculated as a percentage of the consumer prices. On bases of study findings, it was concluded that the marketing margins were higher in comparison to services offered. The marketing services are very limited to transportation of products from farms to wholesale markets or from wholesale to retail markets.
