FARMERS AND FIELD AGENTS EVALUATION OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION METHODS IN SOME HADHARMOUT COASTAL AREAS

Summary

This study was conducted during January 2002 - July 2002 for the aim of evaluating extension methods used by extension service in convincing farmers about the worth of new farm technology, identifying strength and weaknesses of these methods, and determining possibilities of extension work improvement and sustainability. Data was collected using a questionnaire filled during direct interviews with farmers and extension field agents. Random sample of 126 farmers and 18 agents was involved in the study. Data were analyzed using ratio calculation method, averages. Results showed that majority of farmers (91%) have benefited from extension demonstrations and have achieved higher production and more profit. Extensionist’s Field visits covered 80% of extension advices and information received by farmers. Farmers’ problems were also solved through information feed back to research agencies with a ratio of 79%. The study concluded with a number of recommendations towards improvement and sustainability of extension service.
