Summary

Survey study was carried out in fine districts, Thamud, Rumah, Quf Awamer, Alaber & Hager alseiar in (2005-2006) agricultural seasons at Hadramout’s desert. Objectives of the study were to identify the local animal breed, forage resources used in sheep and goats nutrition and to identify the most prevalent diseases in the desert. Results showed that the orientation in all regions is to breed the goats more than to sheep. That is because of goats high ability to adapt in the local environment as compared to sheep. Characteristics of goat strain (Thamud) were small in size and often white in color with average weight of 24 and 22.5 kg for males and females respectively. Characteristics of sheep were irregular in colours which ranged between white, black and brown or mixture of them with average weight of 28 and 25 kg for males and females respectively. Results also revealed that 82.8% of breeders depended on purchasing feed from the market to feed their animals compared to 17.2% depended on the pasture in addition to purchase forage from the market. Pasture in the region is very limited, that is because of lack of water in the regions which has led to a decline production of pasture and vegetation growth except for trees such as Acacia; Acacia tortils , Acacia ehrenbergiana and Sagvadora persica.Bronchitis, weakness and diarrhea were found to be the most prevalent diseases in all locations. Livestock is considered to be the highest source of raisers income with 90.63%.
