Summary

The study was conducted for 4 consecutive seasons (during 1999 - 2002). During the first season (winter), each of collected 21 local wheat samples were planted in 9 X 4 m2 plots. Five optimal samples and 90 individual spikes selected for existing inner variation of "Arabi" local variety, were planted next season (Summer). Output comprising yield spike of 36 spikes and 60 selected individual spikes, was planted next season (3rd, winter) in the experimental farm. Output of this season, comprising 5.5 Kilograms of pure seeds, yield of 56 spikes, and 70 selected individual spikes was an input for next season (fourth season) where planting was undertaken in the experimental farm of the Central Highlands Research Station as seed maintenance program. Individual spikes were planted in farmers' fields at two locations of 200 m2 each (Qa'a Palasan in Dhamar and in Yareem). Purity of Arabi wheat local variety reached 98.8 - 99.3%. Varietal traits description, isolation of a new strain and a produce of 25 Kilograms of pure seed were also achieved. Purified seeds realized an economical return of 18801.25 YR with a marginal rate of return of 494.77%.
