Summary

This experiment was conducted during three seasons (2004/2005- 2006/2007) in Al-swairy research farm to evaluate seven potato varieties (Picasso, Maranca, Amorosa, Fabula Markies and Diamant) and Baraka variety as a check, in terms of yield, quality and suitability to local climate condition. Picasso, Maranka and Baraka varieties have shown superiority in yield as compared to the check variety Diamant. Results of yield grading vigure have shown highly significant difference in terms of big tubers size between all varieties and that of the check. Field evaluation showed that all studied varieties have been infested by early blight disease with highest infection on Amorosa variety ( 4.26%) that significantly differed from the check. Difference was also significant in terms of insect invasion between studied varieties as compared with the Check; with highest infection on Picaso, Baraka and Maranka varieties ( 11.25- 15.08%). The resistance of varieties to laat miner insect varied significantly with highest infection (3.22 / leave) observed on Diamant and lowest on Picasso and Fabula varieties. Tuber weevil infected all varieties with highest infection on Paraka variety (8.25%). Accordingly, Picasso and Marank varieties differred significantly as compared with Diamant variety in yield production and marketable yield. But, because of Marnaka's high rate of small tubers yield, Picasso variety is recommended for generalization.
